Sri Lanka Overview

Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean that lies about 20 miles off the southeast coast of India. Its official name is the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The country was formerly called Ceylon.

Sri Lanka boasts no fewer than seven World Heritage Sites listed by Unesco, ranging from sacred cities, and palaces to colonial strongholds. The ancient sites of Anuradhapura, Dambulla Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and Panduwasnuwara, are worth a visit to see where the remains of a great civilisation once stood.

CLIMATE

Temperatures in the low coastal areas average 80° F (27° C). Temperatures in the mountains average 60° F (16° C). Average annual rainfall ranges from about 50 inches in the northeast to about 200 inches in parts of the southwest.

There is a high threat from terrorism in Sri Lanka. Fatal attacks have become more frequent. They have occurred in Colombo and throughout Sri Lanka, including in places frequented by foreign travellers. Further attacks may occur at any time.
