South Korea

South Korea Overview

South Korea has been separated from North Korea by a demilitarised zone since 1953, and has flourished to become a stable and mature democracy. Seoul, the world’s tenth largest city, is ringed by mountains, and offers a multitude of attractions and a vibrant nightlife.

Another area to explore is the southeastern region, with its wealth of archaeological treasures. Gyeongju, ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom, is an open-air museum boasting ruins dating from as early as 57 BC.

CLIMATE

Summer weather varies little throughout South Korea. July temperatures average between 70° F (21° C) and 80 °F (27 °C). Korea’s massive mountains protect the peninsula’s east coast from the winter monsoon. As a result, the east coast generally has warmer winters than does the rest of Korea.
