South Africa Overview
South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho (which is completely surrounded by South Africa). It is a vast country with widely varying landscapes and has 11 official languages, as well as an equally diverse population. South Africa is renowned for its wines and is one of the world’s largest producers of gold. South Africa has the strongest economy in Africa, and is an influential player in African politics.
South Africa was the last nation in Africa ruled by a white minority. From the late 1940’s to the early 1990’s, the white government enforced a policy of rigid racial segregation. In 1990 and 1991, South Africa repealed most of the main laws on which apartheid was based. In 1993, the country extended voting rights to all races, and democratic elections were held the next year.
South Africa has a wealth of animal and plant life scattered across its land from desert to snow-topped mountains, to forests and mangrove swamps. The Kruger National Park is one of the most well known South Africa parks offering visitors the iconic African safari – a spectacular sight of lion prides, elephant herds and other animals, played out against the backdrop of the Savannah.
Of course South Africa is not only a jumping off point, it is itself a superb destination rich in culture, fauna & flora and history. From Cape Town you can visit Table Mountain, Robben Island and Cape Point. One thing not to miss is, if you choose to go to the top of Table Mountain, don’t miss out on the spectacular views over Cape Town once you’re up there.
