Nestled in the heart of the South Pacific, the Kingdom of Tonga is a tropical paradise comprising 170 stunning islands, only 36 of which are inhabited. Known as the “Friendly Islands” due to the warm hospitality of its people, Tonga offers a unique blend of rich Polynesian culture, untouched beaches, and thrilling outdoor experiences. This travel guide to Tonga provides everything you need to plan your journey to one of the Pacific’s most authentic island nations.

Discover Tonga

Upon arriving in Tonga, travellers are greeted by breathtaking landscapes — from crystal-clear lagoons and vibrant coral reefs to lush rainforests and dramatic volcanic peaks. Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, located on the island of Tongatapu, serves as the gateway to exploring the kingdom. Here, you can explore royal landmarks, such as the Royal Palace, ancient stone trilithons, and bustling local markets offering fresh tropical produce and handmade crafts.

Unlike many other South Pacific islands, Tonga remains largely undeveloped, retaining its traditional way of life and cultural heritage. This makes it a top destination for travellers looking for a truly immersive experience in Polynesia.
