Namibia

Namibia Overview

Namibia located in southwestern Africa was formerly named South West Africa. Most of Namibia’s people are blacks, but the white government of neighbouring South Africa from 1916 to 1990 controlled the territory. In March 1990, after many years of negotiations, Namibia gained full independence from South Africa.

Namibia has a diversity of natural habitats from the rugged coastline to the impressive gorge of the Fish River Canyon winding through the landscape of the great plateau, and the vast salt pan of Etosha National Park, one of the world’s great places to view wildlife.

CLIMATE

Daytime temperatures in Namibia average 75° F (24° C) in January and 68° F (20° C) in June. Namibia receives most of its rain between December and March.
