Germany

Germany Overview

Germany, (officially: the Federal Republic of Germany), (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is the largest country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by Denmark, to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic, to the south by Austria and Switzerland, and to the west by France, LuxembourgBelgium and the Netherlands. Germany is a federation of 16 states, roughly corresponding to regions with their own distinct and unique cultures. Germany is one of the most influential nations in European culture, and one of the world’s main economic powers. Known around the world for its precision engineering and high-tech products, it is equally admired by visitors for its old-world charm and “Gemütlichkeit” (coziness). If you have perceptions of Germany as simply homogeneous, it will surprise you with its many historical regions and local diversity.

Germany’s land ranges from a low, flat plain in the north to mountainous regions in the south. The country has a number of world-famous scenic areas. The Bavarian Alps, along Germany’s southern border, and The Black Forest, a mountainous area in south west Germany, is known for its mineral springs and health resorts. In western Germany, many people enjoy boat rides on the beautiful Rhine River.

Germany’s historical ups and downs are reflected in a rich architectural legacy that spans the breadth of the country, from the castles lining the banks of the Rhine to medieval towns such as Lübeck, now a World Heritage Site.
