In 1940, the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania and forced it to become one of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union. Lithuania regained independence in 1991, the year the Soviet Union dissolved.

The five national parks of Lithuania reflect the intensity and diversity of the landscape; the lake district of eastern Aukstaitija; the forests of Dzukija; the woodlands of Zemaitija descending into vast open plains; and the most spectacular of all, Neringa, set on a spit of land covered in rolling sand dunes and pine forests.

Travel Warning

The majority of visits to Lithuania are trouble-free. There have been reports of petty theft and robbery. Beware of pickpockets, avoid unlit streets and parks at night, and be extra vigilant if you’re walking alone. Take extra care of your belongings in busy locations and on public transport. Don’t leave coats and handbags unattended in bars, pubs and clubs.

A small number of tourists have reported incidents on public transport and around the train station area of Vilnius where they have been approached by small groups of people asking for money or help. Be vigilant in these areas.

Attacks in Lithuania can’t be ruled out. You should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be in public areas, including those frequented by foreign travellers.
