Djibouti Overview

Djibouti is a small country in northeastern Africa. It lies on the western shore of the Gulf of Aden. Djibouti is an extremely poor country, in 1977; it gained independence from France, which had ruled the area since the late 1800’s.

The capital, Djibouti City is located in the south of the country close to the Somali border and is an important harbor town. Most of the land in the country is very dry and rocky. There are some spectacular rock formation, volcanoes and lakes, like Lac Assal and Abbe.Tadjoura is on the other side of the Gulf of Tadjoura and is an ideal location to take in some diving.

CLIMATE

Djibouti has one of the hottest and driest climates in the world. The temperature in Djibouti averages 85 °F (29 °C), and can rise above 107 °F (42 °C) from May to October. The country receives less than 5 inches of rain annually.
