Situated in Eastern Europe, Belarus became part of Lithuania in the 1300’s. It passed to Poland in the 1500’s and to Russia in the late 1700’s. A Communist government was established in Belarus in 1919 and became a republic of the Soviet Union in 1922. It remained a Soviet republic until 1991, when it declared its independence.
