Nepal Climate
Nepal’s climate varies significantly due to its diverse geography, ranging from tropical in the lowlands to alpine in the high mountains. The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are mild and the weather is clear.
In spring, temperatures in Kathmandu average around 61°F to 73°F (16°C to 23°C), while in autumn, they range from 59°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C). The summer monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall, especially in lower regions, making it less ideal for travel.
Winter (December to February) can be cold, especially in the mountainous areas, with temperatures dropping below freezing in higher altitudes.
Safety advice for Nepal
Never trek alone. Use a reputable agency, remain on established routes and walk with at least one other person. Take note of weather conditions and forecasts, and come prepared. Altitude sickness is a risk in all trekking regions.
There’s a low rate of serious crime in Nepal. Watch out for pick-pockets and bag-snatching, particularly in airports, on buses and in areas popular with foreign tourists like Thamel, Sanepa and Kupondol in Kathmandu.
Bars and restaurants close at midnight. Foreigners remaining in bars and clubs after hours have been detained by the police. Take care when entering ‘dance bars’ as some foreigners have been swindled or harassed.
Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Nepal. Attacks can be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Be vigilant in public places and take local advice.
