In the summer months, from May to September, temperatures in places like Cairo and Luxor can reach highs of 104°F (40°C) or more, making outdoor activities uncomfortable. The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April when temperatures are much cooler, ranging from 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C).
Coastal areas like Alexandria experience milder temperatures due to the Mediterranean breeze. Winter months, especially December and January, offer pleasant weather for sightseeing and exploring the ancient monuments.
Safety advice for Egypt
It’s been advised against all travel to:
- the Governorate of North Sinai due to the significant increase in criminal activity and continued terrorist attacks on police and security forces that have resulted in deaths
It’s been advised against all but essential travel to:
- the Governorate of South Sinai, with the exception of the area within the Sharm el Sheikh perimeter barrier, which includes the airport and the areas of Sharm el Maya, Hadaba, Naama Bay, Sharks Bay and Nabq; however, we advise against all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el-Sheikh;
- the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions, excluding the coastal areas between the Nile Delta and Marsa Matruh
The crime rate in Egypt is generally low, take care of your passport and valuables. Use hotel/hostel safes and beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers. If you are the victim of any crime you must report it to the tourist police immediately.
Failure to report crimes before you leave Egypt will make it impossible to seek prosecution at a later date.
Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt. The main threat is from extremists linked to Daesh-Sinai. You should avoid crowded places and gatherings. Take extra care over local holiday weekends, as some terrorist attacks have occurred during these times.
