If you are travelling outside of North America/Canada, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand, you maybe required to be vaccinated against certain diseases, seek advice from your doctor at the earliest opportunity. If malaria is a risk in the destination you plan to visit, then everyone including children will be required to take appropriate precautions.

With most vaccination the majority are taken by injection, if your child(ren) has a fear of needles explain to them what the injection is for and comfort them whilst the injection is taken place. Take along a favourite toy to distract them and allow extra time if needed.

If your child(ren) has a history of illness at home, be prepared for it to reoccur whilst abroad. Seek advice from your doctor in advance of travelling and take an emergency supply of medication to cover every situation.

Once abroad the same rules apply to keep you and your child(ren) in good health, drink bottled water if you know the water isn't safe. Drink plenty of it which will help to avoid both constipation and dehydration.

If you have any doubts about the quality of tap water, drink, wash and clean your teeth in bottled or sterilised water. Also avoid ice in your drinks.

Be meticulous about hygiene, washing your own hands and your children’s regularly should prevent you and your child(ren) from suffering upset stomachs.

Eat fresh food that has been thoroughly cooked. Avoid salads and fruits which you have not peeled yourself, also shellfish should never be eaten raw.

If you are travelling to a mosquito infected area use nets and child friendly insect repellents to prevent bites.
