Just because you have children doesn't mean you have to stop travelling. Visiting other countries and experiencing different cultures can be a superb educational opportunity for your child(ren). All you have to remember is that you are travelling at your child's pace, which maybe even slower than yours.
Whilst you are preparing for your trip don't forget your child(ren) may require a passport and visa. Apply for a passport as early as possible and remember if a child(ren) requires a separate passport they will require a separate visa.
If a child is included on a parent's passport then they may not require a separate visa, although it is recommended you contact the relevant embassy to confirm this.
One thing not to overlook when travelling abroad is travel insurance for your child(ren). You need to make sure your child(ren) are sufficiently covered for any medical and repatriation costs.
On the day you travel ensure your child(ren) get plenty of sleep and fluids and have a light but filling meal before setting off.
If you require a travel cot check that the mattress does not sag. If you have a young baby, it maybe worth considering taking a travel bag, which converts to cot.
Depending on your mode of transport when you arrive at your destination consider taking a car seat. If you are hiring a car you can arrange a car seat to be available, but if you plan on taking taxis and buses you will find the majority won't provide child seats.
If your child is still in nappies and you are planning on a long journey remember to pack plenty of nappies not only to cover the duration of the flight, but if your flight is delayed to cover you whilst you are waiting at the airport.
If you have room in your hand luggage try and pack an extra top for your child, not only will this help if your child spills something on themselves, but aircraft can become rather cold in the cabin.
After your passport and tickets one thing never to forget on a long journey is a couple of toys for your child(ren). Avoid toys that are too noisy but can be packed in your hand luggage. Keep one or two back for the return journey home, this means they won't be bored playing with the same toy over and over. |
