Introduce yourself with a handshake and a smile. A drink of kava may be offered as a sign of goodwill, refusal to drink it may be taken as a discourtesy.

Silence is seen as part of social interaction and pauses in conversation are seen as friendly, not awkwardness. At meals, it is usually the guest of honour to offer a toast following the meal.

The French are proud of their culture and expect visitors to have some knowledge and appreciation of the French culture. Table manners are considered important.
