French is the first language for around 25 per cent of the population. Smoking is banned in public places including bars and restaurants.
CHILE
When greeting someone for the first time, the appropriate greeting is a firm handshake with direct eye contact.
CHINA
Expect a slight bow or handshake when being introduced to someone. Never appear loud or aggressive and maintain your distance when speaking. If you meet a group of Chinese, they may greet you with applause, you should clap your hands in return.
COLOMBIA
Eating on the streets is frowned upon. Good manners are deemed important to Colombians and it is considered impolite to take anything to eat without offering it to others first.
COSTA RICA
A man should walk next to the kerb, whilst the woman should walk on the inside, otherwise it may be taken as a sign that the woman is available. If you are a single female traveller an expression of interest from a man is a hiss, which can be disconcerting but can be ignored if unwelcome.
CYPRUS
It is discourteous to refuse an offer of coffee or a cold drink.
CZECH REPUBLIC
When entering a home you should remove your shoes and leave them by the door.
