Although the vast majority of trips abroad are trouble free, it's important for you to remember that things can go wrong. If they do, it can be much more difficult to deal with than at home. A bit of planning beforehand can help avoid disaster.

If you happen to experience a theft the local police should be your first stop. You'll need a copy of the police report for any insurance claim, be sure to insist on one.

Make sure you report any loss to your insurance company as soon as possible. They will be able to advise you on what you need to do to make a claim.

If you lose your credit card or have it stolen make sure you cancel it by calling your bank's 24-hour emergency number.

If you lose your airline ticket, contact the airline itself or your tour representative, who will arrange for a new one to be issued.

If you lose your travellers' cheques, contact the issuing agent who will organise replacements. Remember to write the cheque numbers down and keep separate from your cheques.

IF YOU ARE ASSAULTED
If you have been assaulted, let your Consul know. They will help you and give you access to the right advice.

IF YOU ARE RAPED
the consul can offer support and help. They can also arrange for a doctor to give advice on issues such as sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

DEATH OF A PARTNER
Whether the death is accidental or not, contact your Consul who will give you advice on what to do when registering the death with the local authorities, as well as help in gaining a death certificate and the repatriation of the body.

The Consul will also explain to you the local legal processes, such as inquests or post mortem's. However they cannot become directly involved in any legal action or police investigation.

NATURAL DISASTER OR CRISES
If the country you are visiting suffers a natural disaster or crisis, try and make contact with your family and friends as soon as possible and let them know that you are safe. Even if the trouble is nowhere near you.
