A tranquil market town set in the Hampshire countryside, Winchester has a history that dates back 2000 years. Once the capital of England in the 9th century, a trip to this town is a must.
Boasting some important architecture, the cathedral was built in the 11th century and is the second largest in Europe. Inside you will find richly carved chantry chapels and coffins, that hold the bones of Saxon Kings. Other buildings which are of significance include Winchester College, which was built in 1382 and retains much of its original structure.
Close to the centre of town, the river itchen winds through attractive gardens, which run alongside the medieval walls of the town.
If you want to get out of the town, Winchester is ideally situated to explore the surrounding countryside. Where you can take in views across the South Downs.
