OCCUPYING the Peninsula of Portsea Island, Portsmouth has an important naval history that dates back some 800 years.
Several significant ships can be found in Portsmouth, one being the HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar. Fully restored the ship shows what conditions on board were like at the time. Other ships to be found include the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's flagship, which was recovered from the seabed and the HMS Warrior, the first iron hulled warship.
As a full working port, Portsmouth offers an embarkation point to mainland Europe with ferry services sailing daily to France and Spain.
If you want to escape from boats for the day, Portsmouth is ideally situated to explore the South Downs, where you can take in views of the surrounding countryside.
If you are looking for a hotel, hostel or want some ideas for a day out you can easily do so by clicking on the links above. The directory will show you what restaurants, nightclubs, theatres etc can be found in the local area, as well as car hire companies and local taxi firms.
