SANDWICHED between the estuaries of the Plym and the Tamar, Plymouth is an important maritime city. It is here where Sir Francis Drake sailed to defeat the Spanish Armada and where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail to settle in the new world of America.

Much of the city centre has been rebuilt after suffering extensive war damage, although you can still see some of the old Plymouth around the Barbican. The area is easy to stroll around and contains some excellent restaurants who specialise in seafood, and with several pubs located within the vicinity the nightlife often becomes very animated.

If you carry on heading north from the Barbican, you will come to Sutton Harbour, which is perhaps the most atmospheric part of Plymouth. It is here where you find attractive old houses and warehouses lining the quays and in the summer months you can past the time away watching the coming and goings of the fishing boats.

Ideally situated to explore Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor National Park, Plymouth is a destination that shouldn't be overlooked.
