SITUATED on the edge of the North Downs, Dover is an ancient port who's history dates back 2000 years. If sailing from Calais to Dover, the first sight of England you will witness will be the white cliffs that soar from the English Channel.

Heavily bombed during World War Two, Dover is quite a sterile town and although often used as an overnight stop on the way to or from France, some great architecture still exists with Dover Castle and Dover's preserved Roman lighthouse, which is thought to date from the 1st Century.

As a full working port, Dover offers an embarkation point to mainland Europe, which services sailing daily to Calais in France and Ostend in Belgium.

If you do find yourself staying for more than a day, other attractions that shouldn't go unmissed include the White Cliffs Experience, which uses the latest technology to bring to life the story of Dover from Roman invasion to World War Two.

If you are looking for a hotel, hostel or want some ideas for a day out you can easily do so by clicking on the links above. The directory will show you what restaurants, nightclubs, theatres etc can be found in the local area, as well as car hire companies and local taxi firms.
