SITUATED along the banks of the river avon, Bath is England's most elegant city, made up of Georgian terraces, crescents and squares arranged around landscaped parks.

Baths prosperity owes itself to its mineral springs, which attracted the Romans and the fashionable 18th century society alike. The spa water still flows into the baths that the Romans built some 2000 years ago, and its history is documented in an associated museum.

If you would like to sample some of the spa water, pay a visit to the adjacent Pump Room. The Pump Room itself was a focal point of social life in the 18th Century, and today the genteel atmosphere is heightened by soothing chamber music.

Located around a square the city's 15th Century Abbey Church overlooks the Roman baths, and from the square narrow lanes peel off and lead to small shops and boutiques.

With a vibrant nightlife, Bath offers a variety of good bars and restaurants and although busy all year round, is a destination that shouldn't go unmissed.
