Airlines have the legal right to refuse passengers who are unable to look after their own needs for the duration of the flight, if required it is essential to ensure that you travel with a competent escort to assist you. This ruling also covers wheelchair users which may include the transfer from your wheelchair to the aircraft seat and toilet.

You may also be required to travel with an assistant if you suffer from severe hearing and vision impairments which might hinder your abilities to respond to cabin-staff instructions in an emergency. If the passenger is travelling on a stretcher or in an incubator the airline will insist that an assistant is available to travel with the passenger. It is strongly recommend that you contact the airline prior to booking your tickets for further guidance.

Cabin crew are fully trained to provide medical assistance during a flight, all airlines have a set procedure for dealing with medical incidents on board, all aircraft will carry first-aid kits, and a medical kit which can be used to treat in-flight emergencies.

Some airlines are now equipping their aircraft with medical diagnostic devices for transmitting clinical signs to a medical expert on the ground, this can cut the time diagnosing your condition drastically and provide the help you may require more quickly.
